Quilt - Project One

I need some help. The beautiful Duyvken sent me a package of squares to get me started quilting and I figured that seeing as they all belonged to the same family why not make quilt #1 from the range.

But here is the first hurdle.

I need some input/help/guidance/suggestions about the matching of colours/patterns.

This is what I've got:

Here's version 2

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

OK - UPDATED! -

After your comments (and OH MY GOODNESS thank GOODNESS all your Internet goodness is feeling so charitable at the moment) I have had a couple more plays. Whaddyathink?

Version 3

Version 4

Version 5

Version two is better, but I have two suggestions (not that I have ever quilted mind you).

One: see how you have the solid reds in the corners? Make the solid[ish] browns the other corners rather than the solid[ish] blues.

Two: get rid of the blues and replace with more reds, browns, creams or greens.

Just my two cents. I think the blues are jarring. But wait and see what the Real Quilters say.

ps. still so proud!

I'm with Suse. I'm definitely NOT a quilter so I'm saying this from a purely aesthetic perspective. My first thought when I scrolled down was that I didn't like the blues. Otherwise, gorgeous!

I think it's totally awesome that you're doing this!

Funny... I like version one better. Just mix them all up. Put blues next to reds. Don't overthink it. Lay it all out, then either squint at it or look at it through a camera lens. This will give you an overall view. You have to try not to see the details, but the whole quilt at once. That lets you notice if one fabric stands out.

Welcome to the quilting fraternity. You know there's no escape, right?

I love them both, but prefer Version 1 as there is no obvious "pattern". Version 2 makes me look for a gradient pattern or something similar.

Congrats on quilting! You're a braver woman than me!!

Well, you asked.

I like version 5 best, but the centre panel is wrong. You need a stronger block of colour in the top left.

The important thing is balance and tone - it sounds wussy, but if it sits comfortably visually, you will find it gets used much more often. Lay it all out and squint at it. Keep shifting squares and squinting until nothing screams at you.

/also non-quilter but old fan of "it all works when you squint" method

Hmmm, sitting here at work squinting at quilt photos. Hope the boss isn't paying attention! ;)
I do like version 5. I like the ones where the colors are all mixed up and there aren't necessarily blues next blues and reds next to reds. Good luck! :o)

My comments are strictly heathen. As always. I like the mixed up version, and agree on the don't over think and squint thing. My sense of colour and tone isn't great but I read that a good way to get tones right (and I think this is way more important than colour) is to take a photo and then make it black and white. The colour values are then really easy to see and the problem of too much dark or light in one area shows up.

Ok, can see the comments button now, but sucha pale blue, it fades into the cream background and is almost invisible - perhaps that was the prob last night?

I'm going Version 4.
In case you're interested, I recently scored 100% on a tough tone recognition test. Not interested? Ah, but I was so proud when those around me puddled :p

Also, I see you won the Silver Spoon. I want to sell mine on eBay, but AB would be crushed. Hate it.

and that supposed to be version FIVE (5) I was going for ....

ugh.

If I knew how to alter templates with any confidence I'd do something to change the colours of the comments button.

I am SO grateful for everyone's input.

Sooz - that b&w thing sounds genius. Am going to go try that now.

Zoe - I have already heaped praise on you via email but that squint thing (and everyone else who recommended it) was ultimately the thing that got me to a stage where I think I really love the arrangement.

I'm going to post it as the next version - I've also moved them all together rather than in groups of four so I can use all the squares (this was kind of important to me as a way of saying thanks Duyvken for sending me my first proper quilting fabric and set) and it just works better - you'll see.

OH - and the squinting thing works a treat for me because all I have to do is take my glasses off!

H&B - the SILVER SPOON is way awesome! I make virtually all my jams from that book. Granted, not much else but they seem to work beautifully!
